Uniform Policy and Dress Code
Students at Hampton Roads Classical wear uniforms as a means to display personal pride in their appearance, promote school spirit, exhibit a standard of excellence, and cultivate a school culture conducive to serious study.
Uniforms were designed with Lands’ End to be dignified, comfortable, durable, and affordable and are meant to reflect a sense of gravitas in students at Hampton Roads Classical. Parents will be given detailed information about the student dress code upon enrollment.
Basic Standard of Appearance
Only approved uniform items may be worn in the school and uniforms must be worn at all times.
All clothing must be clean, reasonably wrinkle free, not torn, and in proper fitting condition. Extremely oversized or undersized uniforms are not allowed. You can use this guide to properly measure your child for their uniform.
If a student is not wearing the appropriate uniform, or the condition is deemed unacceptable, the parent will be notified and a change of clothing will be required for attendance that day.
An approved uniform shirt with the HRC crest must be worn underneath any sweater or fleece.
Jumpers, skirts, and tops (e.g. shirts, sweaters, fleece, etc.) must be purchased through Lands’ End and have the HRC logo.
Pants must fit the waistline and not sag, should not be excessively tight nor show any descriptive lines of the body. Pant length must be below the ankle. Shorts must be at knee length.
Skirts and jumpers are to be worn no higher than the top of the knee. Navy blue cartwheel shorts are required under jumpers and skirts.
A plain black leather belt must be worn at all times for boys in 3rd through 8th grade. All boys will wear a plain black leather belt in the dress uniform. Belts are optional for girls but, if worn, must also be plain black leather.
Outwear like the cardigan sweater, fleece, rain jackets, and lined winter jackets with the HRC crest are available through Lands’ End, but are not required. Students are permitted to wear personal outerwear to and from school and at recess or PE, but not indoors. If personal outerwear is worn (including hats, gloves/mittens, and scarfs), it must be solid with school colors (i.e. maroon, Navy blue) or neutral colors (i.e. black or gray) without bright contrasting colors and have no oversized corporate logos, sports teams, cartoon characters, media logos, camouflage, or other designs.
Hair must be clean with a neat appearance, out of the eyes, and styled traditionally with natural colors. For boys, hair must be no longer than the eyebrows when combed straight down and must not touch the collar or the opening of the ear on the sides. Boys shall be clean shaven. Hair accessories (e.g. ribbons, bows, and headbands) may be worn by girls but should be minimal and must be HRC or neutral colors (e.g. Navy blue, maroon, gray, white, black). Extreme hairstyles including unnatural hair color, trendy or faddish hair styling or coloring arrangements or accessories which are disruptive or distracting are prohibited for all students.
Dress Uniform
The dress uniform is to be worn on occasions where a more formal uniform is appropriate. Some of the events when students will be required to wear their dress uniform include assembly days and certain field trips. Guidelines will be put out in advance when the dress uniform is required to be worn.

The PE uniform consists of a gray active t-shirt with the HRC logo and Navy blue mesh shorts also available from Lands’ End. Active track pants and jacket with the HRC logo are optional. The active track jacket may only be worn on PE days. The active track pants may only be worn during PE, in lieu of changing into shorts.
